Robinson Emergency run fee arises in Columbus City largest in nation with no charge for service Associated Press COLUMBUS: Columbus, the largest city in the country that doesn't charge for emergency runs, is giving the idea serious thought. City officials have revived a proposal to charge for emergency medical treatment or for a ride to the hospital.

"There are several things we have to consider, including the cost of service and the city's own ability to provide service to all citizens," City Councilwoman Jennette Bradley said. The idea has been proposed several times in recent years, but always stalled when either the mayor's administration or City Council raised concerns. The plan this time involves the city charging insurance companies or government-funded health plans for the runs, not individual residents. Mayor Greg Lashutka said it would be the only fair way to implement the charges citywide. The plan could net Columbus about $5 million each year, depending on how aggressively the city attempts to collect.

Some officials are fearful that sick or injured residents who don't have insurance won't call for services, City Councilman Matt Habash said. "We need to assure the general public that if you don't have insurance, we will still provide them the service," Habash said. "That is going to be key to this." The Division of Fire has formed several committees to discuss the idea, while the Franklin County Fire Chiefs Association formed one to find out how the plan would affect suburban fire departments, which don't charge for the service.
