Damon and Elena are the definition of "right person, wrong time." When Elena chooses Stefanmoments before she dies, she tells Damon that Stefan came into her life at a time when she needed someone. She follows it up by saying things might have been different if she had met Damon first.
Little did Elena know that she had metthe elder Salvatore brother before Stefan, but he erased her memories of their interaction. It was a meaningful conversation, and Damon told Elena he wanted her to get everything she was looking for before compelling her to forget him.

A flashback shows Damon and Elena watching the stars together during the summerbetween Seasons 4 and 5. When it begins to pour, Elena doesn't want to leave and the two kisswhile they're completely soaked. Elena asks Damon to promise that they're forever, and he does.

In a heartbreaking moment, Damon confesses his love for Elena after he and Stefan save her from Rose. He takes the memory away as soon as he gets the words out because he thinks he doesn't deserve Elena.

However, Klaus realizes that Elena's blood is the key to creating his hybrids and he sends her to the hospital to drain her. As soon as Damon gets back, he takes Elena home and promises to never leave her again.
Elena Falls For Damon Without Her Memories
After Damon dies, Elena is so distraught that she asks Alaric to take away her memories of falling in love with him. She only remembers the bad thingsDamon did, so when he returns she wants nothing to do with her boyfriend.
But even without her memories, it doesn't take long for Damon to win her heart. Elena falls for him all over again, even without knowing all of the acts of kindness that led her to him, in the first place. This storyline was proof thatnothing can keep Damon and Elena apart.
They Bond On A Trip To Georgia
Up until their trip to Georgia, Damon and Elena weren't on good terms. Damonwas constantly threatening her to get to Stefan, and Elena believed he was a monster. When he rescues her from a car crash, Damon takesElena on a road trip to visit a bar owned by an old friend.
Since Elena was currently mad at Stefan, she begrudgingly goes along with his brother and ends up having a good time. They both see an entirely different side of one another, and Elena saves Damon's life when Lexi's boyfriend tries toget revenge on him for Lexi's death. It marked a turning point in their relationship.
Damon Takes The Cure To Be With Elena
Damon was adamantly against ever being human again, and when faced with the choice of giving up his vampirism or dying, he chose death. But afterthe cure becomes an option for more than one person, Damon starts to seriously consider taking it. While he didn't want to be human for himself, hedidn't want to exist in a world after Elena had passed.
Damon tells her that he wants to cure so he can be her husband and the father of her kids, and Elena is overjoyed by his decision. Although things don't go as planned and Elena falls into a magic-induced sleep for years, they both end up becoming human againand starting a familyat the end of the series.
