How does the pity system work in Honkai: Star Rail?

In this article I will show you how the pity system help you pull your desired character in HSR. Not only that but I will also highlight the drop chances for pulling in any banner.

If you've played HoYoverse's previous game Genshin Impact, you'll already be familiar with the pity system, since both games follow similar gacha’s respective mechanics. The pity system refers to the number of pulls/warps you need to do on a banner before you're guaranteed to get a 4-star or 5-star rarity Character or Light Cone.

Character Pity System explained:

  • soft pity - the 0.6% chance of pulling a 5-star character and gradually rises over time, and between your 75th and 90th pull, that 0.6% chance incrementally increase until it's at 100% ensuring that the 90th pull will guarantee a 50/50 5-Star Character Pulla 50% chance of pulling the banner's featured character and a 50% chance of pulling any of the other 5-star characters that are in the permanent wish pool.

  • hard pity - if you missed the first 50/50, your second soft pity guarantees the event's featured character. In the worst case scenario it would take 180 pulls/warps to guarantee a 5-Star Character.

The 50/50 also applies to the featured 4-star character. Every 10 pulls on one of these banners guarantees a 4-star, which has a 50% chance of being one of the three featured characters, and a 50% chance of being any other 4-star character from the standard pool and you're guaranteed a featured 4-star as part of your second 10-pull set if you didn't get one the first time.

Light Cone Pity System explained:

  • soft pity - the 0.8% chance of pulling a 5-star light cone gradually rises over time, and the pity guarantees a 5-Star Light Cone after 80th pull, although 4-stars are still only guaranteed every 10.

Also, instead of the 50/50, Light Cone Event Warp banners have a 75/25 chance, with the odds in favour of pulling a featured light cone. (This applies both to featured 5-star and featured 4-star light cones.)

There are 3 different Pity Systems running separately in Honkai Star Rail:

Character Event Warp pity

The base chance of pulling a 5-star character on a Character Event Warp is 0.6%. However, these odds increase up to 100% with the Pity System, allowing players to guarantee themselves a 5-Star Character or 5-Star Light Cone.

Note that: If you did not hit the pity in a previous Event Warp your current pity score will carry over to the new Event Warp.

So basically, let’s say you pulled 50 times on Sparkle’s Event Warp and you run out of resources. Now a new Banner comes out for Sam and you want to pull too. Your previous Pity carries over to the new Banner so you continue from 50th pull and you need only 40 more pulls to reach the first 50/50 soft pity 5 Star Guaranteed Pull.

The Character Event Warp is different than the Light Cone Event Warp and different than the Normal Banner Warp. There are 3 different Pity Systems running separately in Honkai Star Rail.

Pity System Explained: 50-50, Soft Pity, Hard Pity and 100% chance 5-Star Character Honkai Star Rail | MisterMenPlays.com | Build Guides, News, Patch Notes, Tier Lists and more (2)

Standard Warp pity

The Standard Warp banner in Honkai: Star Rail (officially referred to as "Stellar Warp") and is the game’s permanent banner.

It works similarly to a Character Event Warp banner: every 10 pulls guarantees at least a 4-star item but the base odds of pulling a 5-star item are 0.6%, rising to 100% between 75 and 90 pulls thanks to the pity system and the accumulation of soft pity.

However, the big difference is that the Standard Warp guarantees both a 5-Star Character and/or a 5-Star Light Cone between 75 to 90. So whenever you hit the Pity System you will receive either 1 — 5 Star Character or 5 Star Light Cone.

Stellar Warp Additional Rewards

After your 300th pull on the Stellar Warp standard banner, you'll be given a one-off selector to choose one of the seven 5-star characters from the permanent pool and claim it immediately.

Note that: this only happens once, after the 300th pull not every 300 pulls, and is a unique opportunity to guarantee a 5-star character from the standard banner.

Beginner Warp pity

The Beginner Warp or the “Departure Warp" is intended as an introduction to the game's gacha for new players and features all 4-star characters and light cones and all 5-star characters from the standard pool, but does not feature any 5-star light cones.

The Beginner Warp is a bit more generous than other banners. It requires only 8 — Star Rail Passes for 10 pulls, and you're guaranteed a random 5-star character by your 50th and final pull, rather than the 90 pulls.

Light Cone Event Warp pity

The base drop rate for the featured 5-star light cones during these events is 0.8%, and pity guarantees a 5-star light cone after 80 pulls, although 4-stars are still only guaranteed every 10. Also, instead of the 50/50, Light Cone Event Warp banners have a 75/25 chance, with the odds in favour of pulling a featured light cone. (This applies both to featured 5-star and featured 4-star light cones.)

Does pity carry over between banners in Honkai: Star Rail?

Pity carries over between banners of the same type in Honkai: Star Rail, but not between banners of different types.

In other words, any pity accumulated on a past Character Event Warp banner will be retained once that event ends, and carried over to the next Character Event Warp banner of your choice. So, for example, if you pulled 80 times on Seele's banner but didn't get a 5-star, you're guaranteed a 5-star character from your first 10 pulls on Jing Yuan's banner, with a 50/50 chance of pulling Jing Yuan.

The same goes for Light Cone Event Warp banners.

The pity accumulated do not interchange between Character Event Warp banners or vice versa. Also The Standard Warp banner only accumulates pity on its own behalf, and doesn't influence the pity of either type of Event banner.

Frequently asked questions:

  1. How does the 50/50 system work in Honkai Star Rail?:

a: The 0.6% chance of pulling a 5-star character and gradually rises over time, and between your 75th and 90th pull, that 0.6% chance incrementally increase until it's at 100% ensuring that the 90th pull will guarantee a 50/50 5-Star Character Pulla 50% chance of pulling the banner's featured character and a 50% chance of pulling any of the other 5-star characters that are in the permanent wish pool.

If you missed the first 50/50, your second soft pity guarantees the event's featured character. In the worst case scenario it would take 180 pulls/warps to guarantee a 5-Star Character.

The 50/50 also applies to the featured 4-star characters/light cones. Every 10 pull on one of these banners guarantees a 4-star item, which has a 50% chance of being one of the three featured 4-star characters/light cones, and a 50% chance of being any 4-star character or light cone from the standard pool. As with the featured 5-star character, you're guaranteed a featured 4-star as part of your second 10-pull set if you didn't get one the first time.

  2. How does Pity work in Honkai Star Rail?

a: On the game’s character banners, players are guaranteed to pull at least one 4-star character every 10 pulls, and one 5-star character every 90 pulls.

The Light Cone banner (equivalent to a weapon banner) also guarantees at least one 4-star every 10 pulls, while 5-star drops are guaranteed every 80 pulls.

  3. Does Pity reset after a 5-star pull in HSR?

a: Pity will reset whenever you get a 5-star pull. For example, if you get a 5-star character after just 50 banner pulls, as opposed to the guaranteed 90 — your counter will reset to zero immediately.

  4. How to get a guaranteed 5-star character in Honkai Star Rail?

a: The best way to guarantee a 5-star character in the game is by using the Pity system to increase your odds.

  5. How can I see what my Pity number is in HSR?

a: In order to check your pity, go to details on any banner and click on it. The past history of your pulls can be found in the “View Records” section. Always remember to count from the pull after you obtained a 5-star. Every page has 5 pulls each with the first page being the latest.

The records take around an hour to update after performing the pulls.

  7. Is there a any difference between 5 Star Character Pity and 5 Star Light Cone Pity?
