Halloween is Monday and there are plenty of upcoming activities in Hardin and McNairy counties to help you celebrate.
There are several trick or treat events for the community. First Baptist Church in Counce, 100 Old Hwy. 57, is hosting its fall festival Saturday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. There will be carnival games and activities, candy “trunk or treat,” cakewalk, bingo and food purchases to take home.
Michie is also hosting a fall festival on Saturday at its city park, 6196 Tenn. 57. The event starts at 10 a.m. and includes vendors, kids game, live music, a cornhole tournament, in addition to trick or treat stations. Candy for trick or treaters will be handed out from 3 p.m. until the event’s end time of 5 p.m.
On Saturday evening, locals can enjoy an outdoor family-friendly free movie showing of “Halloweentown,” at Savannah’s Tennessee Street Park, 200 Tennessee St. The movie starts at dark and you should bring a blanket or lawn chairs to enjoy the show.
Wildwood Farms in Michie also offers a pumpkin patch with hayrides, kids game and a petting zoo. There is a fee for children, which includes all activities and a pumpkin. The pumpkin patch is open today (Thursday) through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The patch will also be opened on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
If being scared is how you like to celebrate your Halloween, there are local places for you to enjoy as well.
In addition to its pumpkin patch, Wildwood Farms is holding a zombie hunt. Attendees will receive a “gellyblaster” with “gellyballs” to eliminate zombies before they can get to you. You will be hunting zombie while taking a hayride through the woods. There is a fee and the zombie hunt starts tonight (Thursday) through Saturday from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
If walking through scary woods is a thrill, there is Whitaker Hills Haunted Trail, at 8815 Tenn. 128, Savannah. Attendees should plan to spend 30-45 minutes walking along an “extreme haunted trail” through the backwoods where a family of “killers” awaits.
There are no special effects or movie lighting, only darkness. There will also be traps set up all over the trail, with noises from the distance. An unknown family of strange killers will be hunting you and you may be taken away from your group – or you may be a “survivor.”
The Haunted Trail is on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Halloween night (Monday), from 7-11 p.m. There is a fee that includes a bonfire and slasher movies that will be playing each night on a large outdoor screen.
Another haunted attraction is Derailed Haunted House in Ramer. Located at 4385 Tenn. 57-W, Derailed is actually held in a former train depot building and has two separate walk-in haunted attractions, Vengeance and Terror Town 3-D.
Vengeance is the signature attraction with highly detailed sets and staffed with live actors and engaging animatronics.
Terror Town in 3-D offers visually stunning artwork under UV lighting with guests wearing 3-D glasses. Live actors also provide a variety of surprises as you make your way through the attraction.
Derailed also offers non-scary escape rooms where guests test their problem solving skills in the three-minute escape rooms, Stalag 13 and Escape by the Numbers in 3-D.
Derailed Haunted House will be open Friday through Monday from 7-11 p.m. Free movies will also be shown outside if the weather permits. Ticket prices and more information is available online at derailedhauntedhouse.com.
For those looking to trick or treat on Halloween night, both Adamsville and Savannah are hosting treat gathering events.
Children can participate in Adamsville’s Halloween Trick or Treat Trail at City Park, 215 Crowe St., starting at 5 p.m.
In addition to its free Halloween movie night on Saturday, Savannah is also hosting its annual Treat Street on Halloween at Tennessee Street Park starting at 6 p.m.
Treat Street is hosted by Savannah Main Street and Director Stephanie Timbes said locals really enjoy the city’s trick or treat event.
“The community’s response has been great every year. I get multiple calls and emails from people wanting to know when the event will be as soon as the end of August rolls around. We estimate around 1,000 or more kids come to Treat Street,” Timbes said.
There are expected to be about 30 vendors giving out treats at the park and a prize will be awarded to the best decorated booth.
