Attorney General William Tongannounced Tuesday he plans to take legal action against three Stamford smoke shops accusedof selling illegal Delta-8 THC products.
Tong made the announcement at Stamford Police Headquarters. It comes after Stamford police say they recently seized thousands of dollars’worth of Delta-8 THC and other illegal products, like marijuana and psychedelic mushrooms, from each of the smoke shops.
The businesses include Zaza Smoke Shop on West Main Street, Breeze Smoke Shop on Hope Street and World's Exotic Smoke Shop on Summer Street.
"We get tremendous calls from parents, from our educators at the schools that this is a very large problem," Assistant Chief Richard Conklin said.
Tong previously sued five retailers accused of selling illegal Delta-8 THC products in Hartford County.
"Every Delta-8 product that's been sold in our investigations contains .3 THC or higher," Tong said. "If it's .3 or higher, it's got to be sold in a licensed dispensary here in Connecticut, which means it's regulated, it's tested."
"Apart from the civil penalties and criminal exposure the shop owners will face, the point is to get these products off the shelves and out of Connecticut homes and schools," Tong added.
Conklin says in addition to legal action, teens should be educated on the dangers of products like Delta-8 that contain high levels of THC.
"From rehab locations and different educational parental groups, they're educating youth not to get involved in these products," Conklin said.
Conklin says investigators raided a fourth business, Smokey Bear Vape Shop on Broad Street on Thursday. He expects legal action will also be taken against that business.
